Many health problems can cause Bels Palsy. Here are some insights about the condition:
- Some Bell’s Palsy cases are thought to be caused by the herpes virus that produces cold sores or is the result of an infection such as Lyme disease, trauma, toxic exposures or other causes that damage or inflame cranial nerves.
- Bell’s Palsy is more common in adults, in people with diabetes and in pregnant women.
- Bell’s Palsy comes on suddenly, often over night.
- A small number of people may have permanent muscle weakness or other problems on the affected side of the face. An even smaller number experience a reoccurrence.
- It’s important to note that Bell’s Palsy is not the result of a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
