Strelcheck Chiropractic Clinic Patient, Maria, Crystal Lake IL

My name is Maria Mitchum and I started coming here around mid-April because for the last five years I have been having really bad pains in my right leg. I was having lower back pains, headaches and neck aches. I had seen a doctor for all of this and I was diagnosed with a condition. He wanted to start me on a regiment of steroids, a treatment with steroids. Along with the steroids there were other medications to counteract the effects and I really didn’t want to do that. At the time I was taking care of my father and this one, she’s just two, she was just born and I read about the side effects of steroids and mood swings, I wasn’t going to deal with that. My son was already seeing Dr. Strelcheck and he kept telling me: “You have to see a chiropractor.” He didn’t want me to take this medication and I didn’t want to do it either. I dealt with my problems taking Advil at night so I could sleep because I was having a really hard time sleeping at night with the pain. Finally I decided I am going to do it, I’m going to come see the doctor. I never saw a chiropractor, I was seeing my rheumatologist and he is the one… He’s a great doctor don’t get me wrong at Northwestern but when he said this is what I needed to do in order to get my condition under control, I really didn’t want to go that route and when my son recommended this doctor, I said why not? Let me give it a shot. The treatments have been helping tremendously. I used to go up and down the stairs like a baby almost; one foot then the next, one foot then the next and now I can even run up and down the stairs. It’s amazing!

Strelcheck Chiropractic PhysioTaping

Hi, I am Candice, a physical therapy technician at Strelcheck Chiropractic Clinic. Today we are going to talk about physiotaping. Let’s start with what is physiotherapy? It originated in Japan during the 1970s when doctors were looking for a sports taping method that would assist in the healing of tissues and muscles but not reduce the range of motion at a joint. Once medical professionals began seeing the numerous beneficial effects, it quickly moved into the United States and many other countries. Nowadays you see athletes wearing brightly colored physio-tape at most sporting events. Physiotape is believed to work by reducing pain, improving function and reducing swelling. So let’s break that down. Physio-tape may work to reduce pain by stimulating nerve receptors in and under the skin. Signals from the receptors that detect movement and touch reach the brain faster than pain signals therefore the pain signals interrupted and the pain is decreased. This is the same concept as when you accidentally bump your head and quickly rub it to decrease the pain. Physiotape may also work to improve the function at a joint. When tape is applied with considerable stretch it changes the position of bony structure. This allows a joint to move freely and with correct alignment. Applied physiotape may also help to reduce swelling in an area. It is believed that the tape helps to activate the autonomic nervous system which regulates blood circulation and in turn decreases inflammation. Now let me demonstrate how physiotape is applied. So the first step is to wipe the area down with alcohol swab. Then we are going to begin by adding our first trip of physiotape. Now if the taped area ever becomes red, itchy or irritated, remove the tape right away. Also if the tape ever increases your pain or discomfort remove it. It is only to bathe, shower or swim with the physiotape on. However the adhesiveness of the tape becomes reduced when it is wet therefore patting the area dry rather than rubbing it is always the best option. Now the physio-tape should stay on your skin for approximately one week however, if it begins to roll, attempts to replace it. If it continues to roll, snip it off at the base of the role. If you find that you’re having trouble with your physio-tape staying, shave the area prior to your next taping session. Now we are going to add our last strip here. The easiest way to remove physiotape is in a warm shower with a little bit of soap and water. Remember to pull with the direction of the hair growth for easiest removal. Our last step here is just to smooth down all our edges and make sure we have a nice tight seal. As you have learned, physiotape can be used to decrease a variety of symptoms associated with the muscular and skeletal systems. For additional information, please ask your doctor as it is always recommended to confirm with a healthcare professional prior to attempting use.

Patient of the Month, Jason W.

Daniel: Hi I’m Dr. Daniel Strelcheck with Strelcheck Chiropractic Clinic and welcome to or patient of the month. Jason: Hi, I am Jason West. I just wanted to tell you a little bit about my situation. I have been suffering from back problems since 2001. I have gone from everywhere from out of state to neurologists to pain management doctors, cortisone shots, physical therapy and nothing seems to help. Recently I was told to go see a chiropractic clinic and I did and they told me it was going to be $10,000 for 23 treatments and I thought that was a little much so we were referred by another person to check out Dr. Strelcheck and when we did we found out that it was a third of the cost and it’s been more than what I can expect on treatment and care and their office is a great. It’s been about a third of the cost compared to $10,000 in the past and I just want to let you know if anybody thinks something is fishy with your chiropractic clinic, go check out Strelcheck because he is the man to talk to. Daniel: I want to thank you Jason for trusting your health with us and I appreciate that. Jason: No problem, thank you doc. Daniel: For a healthy and happy life I am Dr. Daniel Strelcheck. Jason: And I am Jason West.
